For those who like having walls with pictures and doo dads hung up in various places, it can be daunting to precisely hang items around windows. But we can use a framing square and the window as the reference point to make things easier.

Accurately Hung Sconces
I’m thinking of a pair of items that one might like to hang on either side of a window for decorative purposes.
As usual, there are many ways to try to locate your anchors or hangars for pictures and hanging knick knacks. You could use a tape measure and measure up from the floor or down from the ceiling to get a height measurement. Then you could come off the window on each side and try to intersect your vertical marks. That’s a lot of measuring and work.
The Framing Square
An easier way is to use a framing square of appropriate size, most likely a 12 inch or 24 inch square should be plenty to give you an accurate location quick and easy.
Just use the corner of the window as your reference point. Put the square against the window trim whatever distance down from the corner. You automatically have access to both vertical and horizontal distance.

Framing Square Left
Using my two pictures, you can see I come off the left corner of my window. I slid the square down 5 inches and I mark off at 9 inches. I repeat the exact same procedure for the right side of the window. My two pencil marks are now precisely symmetrical from the window. Use any dimensions that suit you as long as they are used for both sides.

Framing Square Right
I avoid the dreaded words from my interior decorator… the left side is a little too high and doesn’t match. You avoid the classic Pink Floyd song “Another Hole in the Wall.”
This will be a helpful tip especially for those who have new homes and are faced with hanging lots of stuff. If those things need to be mirror images from a window, this will be a time saver to locate your mounting holes.
PS. yes, I am aware the title is “brick in the wall”. As author, I am entitled to a certain amount of literary license. 🙂
Until next time, keep the dream alive! We wish you a great day!
